Queenstown and mountains above Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand

Discover the journey

Follow the Otago Rail Trail from Clyde to Middlemarch on a four-day cycling journey with Queenstown connections. Proposed overnight stops at Omakau, Wedderburn and Waipiata break the ride into stages of different lengths. The Poolburn Gorge, Ida Valley and Maniototo Plains introduce changing former railway landscapes, rural settlements, tunnels and viaducts along the way. A shorter third day creates room for a steadier rhythm before the final ride and road return. Discuss riding ability, bicycle fit, surface, equipment and luggage movement before choosing the trip. Support arrangements and non-riding alternatives should be clear alongside the distance expected each day.

Journey highlights

  • A Clyde-to-Middlemarch cycling progression

Day-by-day itinerary

This is a proposed itinerary. Daily plans and overnight areas can be adjusted before booking; your written proposal will confirm the final arrangements.

Day 1Queenstown to Clyde and the trail

Transfer from Queenstown toward Clyde, arrange the selected bicycle and begin the rail-trail ride toward Omakau. Allow enough time for fitting and orientation before starting the riding stage.

Overnight area: Omakau.

Day 2Omakau to Wedderburn

Continue through the Poolburn Gorge and Ida Valley corridor toward Wedderburn, with time for the former railway landscape. Tunnels and viaducts should be approached using appropriate trail guidance and equipment.

Overnight area: Wedderburn.

Day 3Wedderburn to Waipiata

Ride toward Waipiata through the Ranfurly and Maniototo Plains corridor, using this shorter stage for a steadier pace. Local stops can complement the riding without changing the overnight target.

Overnight area: Waipiata.

Day 4Middlemarch and the Queenstown return

Complete the ride toward Middlemarch, then return to Queenstown on the agreed road transfer. Allow time for both the final cycling stage and the drive before making evening or onward travel plans.

Questions about this journey

What cycling support should I discuss?

Agree bicycle fit and type, helmets, repair support, luggage movement and a non-riding alternative where needed. Daily distances, surfaces, tunnels and bridges also deserve a clear preparation discussion.

Can I request Group or Private travel?

You can indicate either preference in your inquiry. Your travel specialist will review the format, party size, preferred dates and available arrangements before preparing a quote.

What happens after I request a quote?

Your inquiry starts a discussion of your dates and preferences. You will review the itinerary, services and price before deciding whether to book; the inquiry itself does not reserve travel.
