Discover the journey
Explore a southern New Zealand loop from Queenstown through Fiordland, the Catlins and Stewart Island over six days. Te Anau provides the base for a proposed Milford Sound outing before the route turns toward the southeast coast. A Catlins chapter adds coastal scenery and walking, followed by two nights on Stewart Island for forest and shoreline interests at a steadier pace. The return to Queenstown completes the loop. This is a route with significant road and water connections: ferry conditions and boat arrangements need flexibility. Choose a few walks that suit you, leaving wildlife observations to unfold without promising a particular encounter.

Day-by-day itinerary
This is a proposed itinerary. Daily plans and overnight areas can be adjusted before booking; your written proposal will confirm the final arrangements.
Day 1Queenstown to Te Anau
Leave Queenstown for Te Anau and settle into the Fiordland gateway. Plan to be in Queenstown before the first morning so the journey can begin at a comfortable pace.
Overnight area: Te Anau.
Day 2Milford Sound chapter
Use Te Anau as the base for a planned Milford Sound journey and suitable boat outing. The road timetable, conditions and chosen service need to work together.
Overnight area: Te Anau.
Day 3Across toward the Catlins
Travel toward the Catlins and select a useful combination of coastal scenery and a waterfall walk. Keep the driving distance visible when deciding how many stops fit.
Overnight area: Catlins area.
Day 4Cross to Stewart Island
Continue toward the Stewart Island ferry and cross the Foveaux Strait on the selected service. Leave the arrival time compatible with settling in and a gentle local orientation.
Overnight area: Stewart Island.
Day 5A full island day
Spend another day on Stewart Island for suitable forest or coastal walking and independent time. Any bird-focused outing needs separate arrangements, and a sighting should never be assumed.
Overnight area: Stewart Island.
Day 6Return to Queenstown
Cross back to the mainland and return toward Queenstown to complete the loop. Coordinate ferry and road timings before arranging an onward flight.
