Trees and grass in Auckland Botanic Gardens, New Zealand

Discover the journey

Travel north through New Zealand's North Island from Wellington to Auckland over ten days. Two-night bases in Wellington, Taupo, Rotorua and the Coromandel Peninsula give each setting room to feel different: city interests, lake landscapes, geothermal surroundings and the coast. Choose outdoor activities for your preferred level of effort rather than trying to fit in every well-known adventure. A thoughtfully arranged cultural visit can add another perspective where suitable hosts and access are available. The final Auckland stay completes an open-jaw route, so plan arrival and departure cities separately and let realistic road times shape the stops between them.

Day-by-day itinerary

This is a proposed itinerary. Daily plans and overnight areas can be adjusted before booking; your written proposal will confirm the final arrangements.

Day 1Begin in Wellington

Arrive in Wellington and keep the day flexible, with a modest first introduction to the capital if timing allows.

Overnight area: Wellington.

Day 2A full Wellington day

Spend another day with Wellington's cultural and nature interests, selecting a useful combination of visits. Leave independent time alongside any guided activity rather than assuming a full admission package.

Overnight area: Wellington.

Day 3Travel toward Taupo

Continue north toward Taupo through the inland corridor, with any hosted stop arranged appropriately. The travel day should leave enough time to settle into the lake-area base.

Overnight area: Taupo.

Day 4Taupo activity choices

Spend a full day around Taupo with landscape or outdoor activities chosen for your preferred effort. A gentler local outing can offer a different way to enjoy the setting from a demanding walk.

Overnight area: Taupo.

Day 5Toward Rotorua

Continue toward Rotorua with a considered introduction to the area's landscape and geothermal interests. Choose walking and visit timing around actual access, leaving the arrival evening comfortably paced.

Overnight area: Rotorua.

Day 6Another Rotorua day

Spend another day near Rotorua for a different landscape interest or an appropriately hosted cultural experience. The particular host, activities and access should be agreed before the visit is confirmed.

Overnight area: Rotorua.

Day 7Toward the Coromandel

Travel toward the Coromandel Peninsula, choosing intermediate stops that fit a realistic road day. Keep the arrival afternoon flexible before the fuller coastal day that follows.

Overnight area: Coromandel Peninsula.

Day 8A Coromandel coastal day

Remain on the Coromandel Peninsula for selected coastal scenery and walking, adapting choices to conditions. A quieter option can preserve the landscape focus without assuming a demanding trail.

Overnight area: Coromandel Peninsula.

Day 9Continue to Auckland

Travel toward Auckland and settle into the final city base, allowing time for the road and urban arrival. Longer city interests can be added around an extended stay.

Overnight area: Auckland.

Day 10Finish in Auckland

Finish in Auckland, with additional city time or an airport transfer to fit your plans. The journey ends here without a return to Wellington.
