Discover the journey
Connect Melbourne and Adelaide through inland towns, the Great Ocean Road and Gariwerd's mountain landscapes over seven days. Hanging Rock and Daylesford create an inland beginning before the route turns through Ballarat toward Apollo Bay. Coastal scenery continues toward Warrnambool, followed by the Budj Bim corridor and a separate Gariwerd chapter. A full park day leaves room for selected walks and viewpoints before the road journey to Adelaide. This route offers more variety than a quick coastal drive, while still requiring careful choices about stops. Cultural visits need appropriate local hosts and access, and walking can be adapted to conditions and your preferred level of effort.

Leave Melbourne through the Hanging Rock and Daylesford corridor toward Ballarat. Choose a manageable selection of walks and town interests rather than turning the first day into an exhaustive circuit.
Overnight area: Ballarat.
Day 2Toward the Great Ocean Road
Continue toward the Great Ocean Road and Apollo Bay, leaving time to enjoy the changing coastal setting.
Overnight area: Apollo Bay.
Day 3Coastal landscapes toward Warrnambool
Follow the coastal corridor toward Warrnambool with selected viewpoints and walks. Give each stop enough time and keep any beach access conditional on current local advice and conditions.
Overnight area: Warrnambool.
Day 4Budj Bim toward Gariwerd
Travel through the Budj Bim corridor toward Gariwerd. Any cultural visit should have appropriate local access and its own agreed time, so it can be enjoyed alongside the onward journey.

Day 5A Gariwerd landscape day
Use the full day for selected Gariwerd walks, viewpoints or waterfall interests. Choose the combination around current access and individual preferences, with a shorter alternative kept available.
Overnight area: Grampians National Park area.
Day 6Continue toward Adelaide
Travel through the Stawell corridor toward Adelaide, considering additional countryside interests only where time permits. Keep the road arrival realistic rather than attaching a fixed late-afternoon appointment.
Overnight area: Adelaide.
Day 7Finish in Adelaide
Finish in Adelaide, with an extra city stay or airport transfer to fit your onward plans. This route ends here rather than returning by road to Melbourne.
