Coast and water beside Hazards Beach in Freycinet National Park, Tasmania

Discover the journey

Explore Tasmania's east coast, highlands and western wilderness corridor on a six-day loop from Hobart. Richmond and Bicheno lead into the Freycinet and Bay of Fires chapters before the route turns inland toward Sheffield. Cradle Mountain and a Strahan base bring a different landscape, followed by the return through Lake St Clair country to Hobart. The variety comes with substantial driving, so select a few rewarding walks and viewpoints rather than trying to complete every well-known trail. Outdoor conditions can change quickly, and shorter alternatives help keep the balance between time on foot, time on the road and time to enjoy the setting.

Day-by-day itinerary

This is a proposed itinerary. Daily plans and overnight areas can be adjusted before booking; your written proposal will confirm the final arrangements.

Day 1Hobart to the east coast

Leave Hobart through the Richmond corridor and continue toward Bicheno. Select countryside stops that fit the road timetable, leaving time to settle into the east-coast base.

Overnight area: Bicheno.

Day 2Freycinet and Bicheno

Explore a suitable part of Freycinet National Park before returning toward Bicheno. Decide whether the day should emphasize a viewpoint or a longer walk rather than assuming both.

Overnight area: Bicheno.

Day 3Bay of Fires toward Sheffield

Travel through the Bay of Fires corridor toward Sheffield, allowing time for selected coastal scenery. The inland transfer remains a significant part of the day and should not be compressed.

Overnight area: Sheffield.

Day 4Cradle Mountain to Strahan

Consider a selected Cradle Mountain-area walk before continuing toward Strahan. The final trail choice needs to respect weather, daylight and the road journey still ahead.

Overnight area: Strahan.

Day 5A western wilderness day

Remain in the Strahan area for the western wilderness chapter, with a suitable Tarkine-area interest discussed in your itinerary. Access and walking choices should follow current conditions.

Overnight area: Strahan.

Day 6Lake St Clair corridor to Hobart

Return through the Franklin-Gordon and Lake St Clair corridor toward Hobart. Choose a few final outdoor stops while allowing time for a comfortable road arrival; arrange onward connections accordingly.

  • The five planned nights are in Bicheno, Sheffield and Strahan; Hobart nights before or after can be quoted separately.
  • Confirm park access, local guiding, meals and any winery visit in the written proposal.
