Discover the journey
Combine Rwanda's highlands with southwestern Uganda's forests and wildlife landscapes on a nine-day loop from Kigali. Musanze creates an early highland pause before the border crossing toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. A longer stay in that region leaves time for wildlife and waterway interests before the journey turns south toward Kisoro and the Bwindi forest area. A proposed gorilla-tracking day is a central reason to consider this route, and depends on permits, access and individual suitability. The route then returns to Kigali. Allow flexibility for the forest experience and discuss the terrain, border timing and activity choices before fixing onward travel.

Day-by-day itinerary
This is a proposed itinerary. Daily plans and overnight areas can be adjusted before booking; your written proposal will confirm the final arrangements.
Day 1Arrival in Kigali
Begin in Kigali with a light arrival day, leaving time to settle in and understand the route before the highland and border stages. Permit planning is best resolved before reaching the forest stage.
Overnight area: Kigali.
Day 2Toward Musanze
Travel from Kigali toward Musanze, choosing a sensible balance between the road journey and opportunities to notice the changing highland landscape. The next day avoids another immediate change of base.
Overnight area: Musanze.
Day 3A day near Musanze
Remain in the Musanze area for a separately chosen local activity, with canoeing or a gentle exploration discussed according to current arrangements. A quieter alternative can remain available alongside canoeing.
Overnight area: Musanze.
Day 4Cross into Uganda
Cross from Rwanda into Uganda and continue toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, treating border formalities and arrival as the day's main commitments. Keep wildlife expectations modest on the transfer day.
Overnight area: Queen Elizabeth National Park area.
Day 5Queen Elizabeth waterways
Use a full day in the Queen Elizabeth area for wildlife interests, considering a boat outing as a distinct perspective on the landscape. The boat and land perspectives need separate arrangements.
Overnight area: Queen Elizabeth National Park area.
Day 6Another wildlife day
Remain in the park region for further wildlife observation, allowing the route and timing to respond to local conditions rather than a fixed checklist. Another night permits a steadier local pace.
Overnight area: Queen Elizabeth National Park area.
Day 7Continue south to Kisoro
Travel south toward Kisoro, keeping time for the road and preparation before the following day's planned forest activity in southwestern Uganda. Leave the arrival evening free for practical preparation.
Overnight area: Kisoro.
Day 8A possible gorilla-tracking day
Set aside the day for gorilla tracking only if the required permit, suitable access and individual suitability are confirmed. Keep the rest of the day open, allowing the forest experience to set the pace.
Overnight area: Kisoro.
Day 9Return to Kigali
Return toward Kigali to complete the loop. Allow time for the border and road journey, and consider a city night before an onward international flight.
