Ostrich on the Etosha Pan, Namibia

Discover the journey

Follow a wide southern African arc from Cape Town to Victoria Falls through Namibia and Botswana. The Western Cape and Orange River lead into Fish River Canyon, the Sossusvlei dunes and the Atlantic setting of Swakopmund. Etosha introduces a wildlife chapter before the route reaches northern Namibia, the Okavango Delta and Chobe. Twenty-two days make room for striking changes of landscape, a coastal pause and a possible remote delta stay. This is a substantial overland journey, with long drives and several border crossings. Choose it for the progression through different environments, and discuss remote facilities and daily road time as carefully as the destinations.

Day-by-day itinerary

This is a proposed itinerary. Daily plans and overnight areas can be adjusted before booking; your written proposal will confirm the final arrangements.

Day 1Cape Town arrival

Begin in Cape Town with time to settle in before the extended overland journey. Use this city pause to prepare luggage for the more remote sections ahead.

Overnight area: Cape Town.

Day 2Into the Western Cape

Travel north through the Western Cape, using the day's countryside setting as a gradual transition from city interests to the long overland journey. Keep the country-road rhythm comfortable from the outset.

Overnight area: Western Cape.

Day 3Cross toward the Orange River

Continue toward the Orange River and the Namibian border, leaving enough time for formalities and a calm arrival at the overnight stop.

Overnight area: Orange River.

Day 4Toward Fish River Canyon

Move from the river corridor toward Fish River Canyon, making the scale of the southern Namibian landscape the day's main geographical focus. Viewing time should reflect access and daylight.

Overnight area: Fish River Canyon.

Day 5Across the Namib toward Sesriem

Travel deeper into the Namib toward Sesriem, reserving time for the road and preparation for the following day's dune-area exploration.

Overnight area: Sesriem.

Day 6Sossusvlei and the dunes

Use Sesriem as the base for a proposed Sossusvlei outing, choosing walking and viewpoints in response to temperature and local access conditions. An early start may make selected walks more practical.

Overnight area: Sesriem.

Day 7Reach the Atlantic coast

Leave the inland desert for Swakopmund, where the Atlantic setting creates a marked change after the canyon and dune stages.

Overnight area: Swakopmund.

Day 8Swakopmund at your pace

Keep a full day in Swakopmund for independent exploration, considering streets, museums or a quiet coastal walk before adding specialist excursions. Decide which interests deserve a separate booking.

Overnight area: Swakopmund.

Day 9Another coastal day

Allow a second day beside the Atlantic, using the longer stay for rest or a separately chosen activity rather than another immediate transfer. This pause can be useful after inland travel.

Overnight area: Swakopmund.

Day 10Spitzkoppe landscapes

Travel toward Spitzkoppe and explore the rock landscape at a suitable pace, keeping the overnight setting and walking options clearly defined. Agree which rock-area walks are appropriate before setting off.

Overnight area: Spitzkoppe.

Day 11Enter the Etosha area

Continue north to Etosha, introducing the wildlife chapter with a drive toward the planned overnight base and time to settle in.

Overnight area: Etosha National Park.

Day 12A full Etosha day

Spend another day in Etosha's wildlife landscape, allowing viewing conditions and water availability to influence the route within approved access areas.

Overnight area: Etosha National Park.

Day 13Toward Grootfontein

Leave Etosha for the Grootfontein area and shift attention toward northern Namibia, where the plan may include a carefully hosted cultural interest.

Overnight area: Grootfontein.

Day 14Northern Namibia context

Remain near Grootfontein for a possible local visit and walking context, with hosts and the nature of any cultural exchange agreed in advance. Listening and local consent matter more than staged encounters.

Overnight area: Grootfontein.

Day 15Reach the Bagani area

Travel toward Bagani, using this as a practical staging point for the remote water-based chapter that follows in the Okavango region. Confirm what luggage can continue into the delta.

Overnight area: Bagani.

Day 16Cross toward the Delta

Cross into Botswana and continue toward the Okavango Delta, allowing transfer arrangements to reflect water conditions and the location of the selected stay. A remote arrival should leave room for delays.

Overnight area: Okavango Delta.

Day 17Delta waterways and walks

Keep a full day for the delta's channels and island landscapes, discussing suitable guided water and walking activities without assuming a fixed wildlife program. Choose activities suited to the actual channel conditions.

Overnight area: Okavango Delta.

Day 18Return toward Bagani

Leave the delta and return toward Bagani, with the remote transfer taking priority over extra activities or a tightly timed evening arrival. Allow the transfer to set the afternoon pace.

Overnight area: Bagani.

Day 19Continue to Chobe

Travel toward Chobe through the northern border corridor, checking the route's international formalities before planning any activity after arrival. Border formalities should precede any tightly timed river outing.

Overnight area: Chobe National Park.

Day 20Chobe by land or river

Spend a day around Chobe, considering the contrasting perspectives of a wildlife drive and river outing once suitable local services are selected. Keep the land and river options separately described.

Overnight area: Chobe National Park.

Day 21Cross to Victoria Falls

Cross into Zimbabwe and reach Victoria Falls, leaving time for an initial orientation and a separately scoped visit to the falls area. The falls visit needs its own appropriate access.

Overnight area: Victoria Falls.

Day 22Finish at Victoria Falls

Finish at Victoria Falls, with time for an additional night or a separately chosen activity if you would like to stay longer. Arrange onward flights around the agreed final services.

  • The route crosses South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and returns to Namibia after the delta. Border arrangements need to work together.
  • Remote delta access depends on water levels and the chosen stay. Discuss transfers, toilets, power, luggage limits and an alternative route.
  • Desert walks and wildlife outings should respond to heat, access and local conditions.

Questions about this journey

What should I consider about the remote delta stay?

Discuss water-dependent transfers, camp facilities, toilets, electricity and luggage limits before selecting the stay. The route needs flexibility if access or conditions change.
