Hippos resting in water in Kruger National Park, South Africa

Discover the journey

Link South African wildlife areas, the Kosi Bay coast and Eswatini on a twelve-day loop from Johannesburg. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, Hlane and Kruger create distinct wildlife chapters, while Kosi Bay offers a coastal pause and Blyde River Canyon brings the focus to scenery and walking choices. Several two-night stays give the route variety without a change of base every morning. Families can use this journey as a starting point for discussing ages, interests and the amount of time everyone is comfortable spending on the road. Walking, water activities, border arrangements and overnight facilities should be matched to your particular party.

Day-by-day itinerary

This is a proposed itinerary. Daily plans and overnight areas can be adjusted before booking; your written proposal will confirm the final arrangements.

Day 1Begin in Johannesburg

Arrive in Johannesburg and consider a contextual introduction to Soweto if arrival timing allows, keeping the first day's activity level manageable. A delayed arrival should leave the cultural visit optional.

Overnight area: Johannesburg.

Day 2Travel toward Hluhluwe

Make the substantial journey toward the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi area, concentrating on comfortable road pacing and settling in rather than adding multiple visits. Keep the following park day free from another transfer.

Overnight area: Hluhluwe-iMfolozi area.

Day 3Explore Hluhluwe-iMfolozi

Dedicate the day to a possible wildlife drive in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, with time to observe the landscape as well as look for animals. Let viewing conditions determine how long individual stops last.

Overnight area: Hluhluwe-iMfolozi area.

Day 4Reach Kosi Bay

Travel northeast toward Kosi Bay and settle into the coastal environment, leaving the afternoon flexible after the move from the park area. The following day provides time for coastal activities.

Overnight area: Kosi Bay.

Day 5Kosi Bay's coastal setting

Spend a full day around Kosi Bay, discussing whether a suitable guided water activity belongs in the plan alongside time to relax. Water conditions and family preferences should guide selection.

Overnight area: Kosi Bay.

Day 6Cross into Eswatini

Cross into Eswatini and continue toward Hlane, allowing the international formalities and the road journey to determine the day's sensible pace. Check the crossing before planning an evening outing.

Overnight area: Hlane National Park.

Day 7A day around Hlane

Remain in the Hlane area for a separate wildlife chapter, choosing an appropriate drive or guided activity once access and family requirements are reviewed. A second night avoids immediately moving on.

Overnight area: Hlane National Park.

Day 8Continue to Kruger

Return toward South Africa and the Kruger area, treating the border crossing and arrival at the overnight base as the main commitments. Allow a quiet arrival after the border stage.

Overnight area: Kruger National Park.

Day 9Wildlife in Kruger

Reserve a full day for exploring Kruger in an appropriate vehicle, with a route chosen for conditions rather than a guaranteed animal checklist. Repeated sightings can be as rewarding as new ones.

Overnight area: Kruger National Park.

Day 10Toward Blyde River Canyon

Move from the Kruger region toward Blyde River Canyon, changing the focus from wildlife viewing to the broader scenery of the escarpment. The next day leaves more time for viewpoints.

Overnight area: Blyde River Canyon.

Day 11Landscape and walking choices

Use a second day near Blyde River Canyon for selected viewpoints or walking, matching the amount of activity to the family's preferences. Choose shorter alternatives if the group prefers them.

Overnight area: Blyde River Canyon.

Day 12Return to Johannesburg

Complete the loop in Johannesburg, confirming the road arrival and final drop-off before deciding whether an onward flight needs an additional overnight stay. The final drive should not rely on exact traffic timing.
