Cheetah among grass and trees in Maasai Mara, Kenya

Discover the journey

Follow Kenya's Rift Valley lakes toward the open country of the Maasai Mara on an eight-day loop from Nairobi. Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha introduce different water and wildlife settings, while a possible hosted visit in the Loita Hills adds community context between the lake and reserve chapters. Two nights near the Mara leave time for unhurried observation rather than a single passing drive. This journey favors a few varied places over a longer list of distant parks. Discuss your preferred overnight style, from camping to other feasible stays, and allow the landscape, road conditions and wildlife activity to shape each day's rhythm.

Day-by-day itinerary

This is a proposed itinerary. Daily plans and overnight areas can be adjusted before booking; your written proposal will confirm the final arrangements.

Day 1Begin in Nairobi

Arrive in Nairobi and keep the first day flexible, using any spare time for a modest city introduction before the rural stages. Longer city visits can be considered before the loop.

Overnight area: Nairobi.

Day 2Toward Lake Nakuru

Travel northwest through the Rift Valley toward the Lake Nakuru area, with time to settle in before planning the next morning's exploration.

Overnight area: Lake Nakuru National Park.

Day 3Nakuru wildlife and Naivasha

Use the first part of the day for a possible wildlife drive around Lake Nakuru, then continue to the freshwater setting of Lake Naivasha.

Overnight area: Lake Naivasha.

Day 4A full day near Naivasha

Give Lake Naivasha a full day, considering a boat outing and independent time rather than filling every hour with another transfer. An additional park excursion would need separate timing.

Overnight area: Lake Naivasha.

Day 5Loita Hills community context

Leave the lakes for Loita Hills, where a respectful community visit could provide context for the next section of the Kenyan journey. The visit should reflect what hosts wish to share.

Overnight area: Loita Hills.

Day 6Reach the Maasai Mara

Continue toward the Maasai Mara and allow time to settle near the reserve, with a possible introductory wildlife drive later in the day. Road conditions may affect the first reserve outing.

Overnight area: Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Day 7Time on the Mara plains

Spend a full day exploring the reserve's open landscapes in a suitable vehicle, allowing wildlife conditions to shape the pace and direction. Time to wait and observe matters here.

Overnight area: Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Day 8Return to Nairobi

Travel back to Nairobi to finish the loop, keeping onward flight planning separate until the road arrival time and final drop-off are confirmed. A late departure or extra night may suit better.

What's Not Included

  • International flights to and from the journey.
  • Travel insurance, visas, personal expenses and optional activities, unless expressly listed in the final quote.

Permits, domestic transport, transfers and other services are included only when specified in your written proposal.

Planning this journey

  • Some lake-to-Mara roads are long or rough. Discuss vehicle comfort, luggage space and regular stops.
  • Choose between camping and other feasible stays, including the bathrooms, bedding and equipment you would need.
  • Wildlife drives, park entry and any boat trip will be specified in your quote. Animal sightings depend on natural conditions.
  • Any Loita Hills visit should be arranged with a willing local host and reflect what the community wishes to share.

Questions about this journey

Can I choose a different overnight style?

Discuss camping and other feasible stays before comparing costs. Bedding, bathrooms and equipment are important parts of that choice, alongside the location of each base.

Can I request Group or Private travel?

You can indicate either preference in your inquiry. Your travel specialist will review the format, party size, preferred dates and available arrangements before preparing a quote.

What happens after I request a quote?

Your inquiry starts a discussion of your dates and preferences. You will review the itinerary, services and price before deciding whether to book; the inquiry itself does not reserve travel.
