Open steppe in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Mongolia

Discover the journey

Explore Mongolia through the contrasting settings of Ulaanbaatar, Lake Khovsgol, Gorkhi-Terelj and the Gobi Desert. The twelve-day route uses the capital as a flight connection point between distant regions, giving the northern lake and desert their own chapters. Around Terelj, rock formations and selected paths offer a different landscape again. Simple camp-based stays may form part of the journey, with facilities discussed before booking. Remote roads, four domestic flight sectors and changing weather make flexibility essential. Cultural visits can be considered where respectful arrangements are available, while quieter outdoor time lets the setting remain the focus.

Journey highlights

  • Lake Khovsgol’s northern landscape
  • Gorkhi-Terelj and Aryabal paths
  • Yolyn Am’s canyon setting
  • Gobi dunes and Bayanzag

Day-by-day itinerary

This proposed itinerary can be adjusted around your interests and travel dates. Visits, transport and overnight arrangements are confirmed in your written proposal before booking.

Day 1Arrive in the capital

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and settle into the capital. A light local introduction can fit around your flight, with time to rest before the monastery and city interests tomorrow.

Planned overnight: Ulaanbaatar.

Day 2Monastery and city context

Explore the Gandantegchinlen Monastery area and selected city streets, respecting religious access and activity. The day provides context before travel to more remote regions. Leave space for rest and practical preparation, including the luggage arrangements for the forthcoming domestic flights.

Planned overnight: Ulaanbaatar.

Day 3Fly north toward the lake

Plan to fly to Moron, then continue by road toward Lake Khovsgol. Give the connection and road journey their own time, with a light arrival at the planned camp and a first sense of the northern lake landscape.

Planned overnight: Lake Khovsgol.

Day 4Northern lake landscapes

Spend a full day around Lake Khovsgol, choosing gentle outdoor time and any cultural visit around weather and suitable local access. A boat outing can be considered when conditions allow, with the lake setting remaining the main focus.

Planned overnight: Lake Khovsgol.

Day 5Return to the capital

Travel back toward Moron for a planned flight to Ulaanbaatar, leaving the remaining day flexible. A museum visit may fit once the actual schedule is known. The overnight helps connect the northern sector with the next landscape chapter rather than relying on a rushed continuation.

Planned overnight: Ulaanbaatar.

Day 6Into the Terelj landscape

Continue by road toward Gorkhi-Terelj, with time to appreciate the changing terrain and rock formations. A respectfully arranged cultural visit could be considered separately. Keep the arrival afternoon measured so camp setup and the road journey do not compete with a long walking program.

Planned overnight: Gorkhi-Terelj area.

Day 7Rock formations and temple paths

Explore a selected walk around the Aryabal area and Turtle Rock, with terrain and steps matched to your needs. A food or craft activity can be discussed separately where appropriate local arrangements are available.

Planned overnight: Gorkhi-Terelj area.

Day 8Back through the steppe

Return toward Ulaanbaatar with a selected stop around the Genghis Khan monument complex if timing allows. The city provides a practical overnight before the desert flight. Keep enough time for repacking and checking the next connection rather than adding a crowded evening program.

Planned overnight: Ulaanbaatar.

Day 9Fly toward Dalanzadgad

Take a planned flight to Dalanzadgad and continue toward the Gobi landscape. A selected walk in the Yolyn Am area can be considered after arrival. Flight operation, road conditions and the walking surface determine what is practical on this first desert day.

Planned overnight: Gobi Desert.

Day 10Dunes and the Flaming Cliffs

Explore selected dune landscapes and the Bayanzag area, giving the distances, remote roads and weather room to shape the day. Focus on the desert setting at your preferred pace. An animal ride is optional and needs its own discussion.

Planned overnight: Gobi Desert.

Day 11Return from the desert

Travel back toward Dalanzadgad for a planned flight to Ulaanbaatar. A selected museum or cultural performance may be considered if timing permits. Keep the final city evening flexible so delays in the remote sector do not undermine the overall departure arrangements. The National History Museum provides a possible final cultural focus.

Planned overnight: Ulaanbaatar.

Day 12Depart Mongolia

Finish in Ulaanbaatar and reserve the day for onward travel. An additional buffer night may be sensible around domestic flight schedules and can be discussed when the connections are selected.
