Discover the journey
Travel from Chennai's coast through the temple towns of Tamil Nadu to Kerala's hill-country landscapes and harbor city of Kochi. The fifteen-day route links Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Thanjavur and Madurai before continuing to the Periyar area. Coastal carvings, temple precincts, palace collections and spice-growing country give each stage a different focus. Several multi-night bases leave space to explore without packing every morning. A possible daytime backwater outing near Alleppey adds a waterside perspective on the way to Kochi. There, historic districts and food interests provide a final contrast, with time for a quieter pace before departure.

Day-by-day itinerary
This proposed itinerary can be adjusted around your interests and travel dates. Visits, transport and overnight arrangements are confirmed in your written proposal before booking.
Day 1Arrive on the Tamil Nadu coast
Arrive in Chennai and settle into the first city base. A gentle neighborhood introduction can fit around your flight, with the evening kept flexible for rest before tomorrow's cultural visits.
Planned overnight: Chennai.
Day 2Chennai's cultural contrasts
Explore a selected museum and principal religious or coastal settings in Chennai, with visits grouped sensibly around city traffic. The aim is to introduce different cultural layers. Leave breaks between interiors and outdoor walking, and confirm access before the final order is set. The Government Museum and Marina Beach area provide possible contrasting stops.
Planned overnight: Chennai.
Day 3Kanchipuram on the way south
Travel toward Mahabalipuram via the Kanchipuram area, considering selected temple and weaving interests where suitable arrangements allow. Leave enough time for the inland detour and a comfortable arrival by the coast.
Planned overnight: Mahabalipuram.
Day 4Carved monuments beside the sea
Spend the day among Mahabalipuram's carved monuments and coastal setting. Choose a measured walking route with breaks for exposed or uneven ground, leaving room for independent beach time alongside the selected cultural visits.
Planned overnight: Mahabalipuram.
Day 5Along the coast to Pondicherry
Continue toward Pondicherry and its older streets, with an Auroville-area visit considered only if appropriate access is available. The program favors a manageable introduction over multiple institutional visits. Leave time to settle in and explore part of the town at your own pace.
Planned overnight: Pondicherry.
Day 6Temple country toward Thanjavur
Continue through the Chidambaram area toward Thanjavur, with selected temple visits shaped by opening hours and respectful visitor access. Balance the cultural stops with the road journey, keeping arrival relaxed rather than relying on a late interior visit.
Planned overnight: Thanjavur.
Day 7Trichy and palace collections
Consider the Trichy and Srirangam area before returning to Thanjavur for selected palace collections. Pace the combination around road travel and steps, choosing a smaller group of visits with time to appreciate each setting.
Planned overnight: Thanjavur.
Day 8Chettinad on the way to Madurai
Continue toward Madurai, with a selected look at Chettinad's architectural setting where access permits. A museum visit in Madurai may fit after arrival. Keep flexibility so the day remains comfortable if road timing or opening arrangements change along the way.
Planned overnight: Madurai.
Day 9Madurai's temple-city streets
Explore Madurai's principal temple area and surrounding streets, with Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace a possible separate stop. Visitor access varies across religious interiors, so choose an appropriate route and leave breaks between the urban walking sections.
Planned overnight: Madurai.
Day 10Into the Western Ghats
Travel toward Periyar and settle into the hill-country setting. Winding Western Ghats roads can make the drive slower than the map suggests, so keep the afternoon light and any outdoor outing flexible around arrival.
Planned overnight: Periyar area.
Day 11Landscape and spice-growing country
Consider an outdoor outing around Periyar and a spice-related visit where suitable arrangements allow. Wildlife is unpredictable. Choose walking, possible boat access or an alternative around your activity level, with time to rest at the base.
Planned overnight: Periyar area.
Day 12Backwater landscapes en route
Continue toward Kochi, considering a daytime backwater outing near Alleppey if timing, conditions and suitable vessel arrangements allow. Leave enough space for boarding, time on the water and the onward drive. No houseboat overnight is planned.
Planned overnight: Kochi.
Day 13Food interests and harbor setting
Explore Kochi through a cultural or food-related experience and time around the harbor setting. A cooking session or boat outing can be considered separately. Keep independent space in the day rather than combining every option into one program.
Planned overnight: Kochi.
Day 14Historic districts and performance options
Explore selected historic districts and collections in Kochi, with access checked for religious sites and museums. A performance can be discussed as an optional evening arrangement. Keep the final full day measured, allowing time to revisit a favorite area or prepare for departure. Mattancherry and a selected collection offer possible historical interests.
Planned overnight: Kochi.
Day 15Depart from Kochi
Finish in Kochi and leave time for onward travel. Extra city nights or additional room time can be discussed alongside the departure arrangements.
