Pudong skyline and waterfront towers in Shanghai, China

Discover the journey

Connect Beijing and Xian's historical settings with Chengdu, the Yangtze corridor and Shanghai. Over fourteen days, the journey changes from imperial precincts and terracotta archaeology to Sichuan's city life, river landscapes and the scale of the eastern metropolis. A planned three-night vessel section creates a different rhythm between the land-based stays. Flights, rail and road connections need their own space, so arrival and embarkation days remain lighter. Shanghai provides a final base for gardens, the waterfront and a possible water-town excursion. The river section depends on a suitable confirmed sailing, with the vessel, cabin and excursions selected during planning.

Day-by-day itinerary

This proposed itinerary can be adjusted around your interests and travel dates. Visits, transport and overnight arrangements are confirmed in your written proposal before booking.

Day 1Arrive in Beijing

Arrive in Beijing and begin with time to rest and settle in. A short nearby walk can introduce the city if your arrival permits, with the main historical visits reserved for the days ahead.

Planned overnight: Beijing.

Day 2Imperial city and neighborhood contrasts

Explore the principal imperial-city area and a selected older neighborhood, allowing enough time for security procedures and walking. The aim is to connect formal monumental spaces with a smaller street scale.

Planned overnight: Beijing.

Day 3A day toward the Great Wall

Make a possible excursion to an appropriate Great Wall section, with walking level and access method discussed beforehand. The landscape is part of the visit, so weather and visibility matter. Keep the remainder of the day flexible after the out-of-city transfer.

Planned overnight: Beijing.

Day 4Fly to Xian

Plan to fly to Xian and settle into the next city base. A light local introduction can fit around arrival, leaving the terracotta archaeological setting for tomorrow when there is more time to explore.

Planned overnight: Xian.

Day 5Terracotta archaeology and city context

Explore the terracotta archaeological site with time to move through its visitor areas and take in the context. Return to Xian for a different perspective on the city. A performance or workshop can be discussed separately if it interests you.

Planned overnight: Xian.

Day 6Rail west to Chengdu

Consider part of Xian's city-wall setting before a planned high-speed rail connection to Chengdu. Station transfers and luggage handling need attention. Keep the Chengdu arrival unhurried, with an evening available for a first independent look at the neighborhood.

Planned overnight: Chengdu.

Day 7Conservation and everyday city life

A proposed visit to a suitable panda conservation center can be paired with time in Chengdu's everyday streets. Access and viewing conditions need confirmation, and animal activity varies. Leave room for food interests without promising a particular restaurant or special encounter.

Planned overnight: Chengdu.

Day 8Chongqing and river embarkation

Travel toward Chongqing for the planned river-vessel embarkation. Allow space for the transfer and boarding rather than a long city circuit. A suitable confirmed sailing is essential to this part of the route.

Planned overnight: Yangtze vessel.

Day 9Along the river corridor

Spend the day on the planned Yangtze sailing, taking in the river landscape and the changing setting between ports. A shore visit may be possible according to the selected vessel's schedule and access arrangements.

Planned overnight: Yangtze vessel.

Day 10Gorge landscapes from the water

Continue through the river corridor, with gorge scenery the main focus. Water levels, visibility and vessel operation can change the experience. Any small-boat or shore activity will follow the arrangements of the selected sailing.

Planned overnight: Yangtze vessel.

Day 11Disembark and continue east

Disembark in the Yichang area and consider a Three Gorges Dam visit if access and timing allow, then continue toward Shanghai. Keep this transport day comfortably paced, with the evening left flexible around the onward connection.

Planned overnight: Shanghai.

Day 12Gardens and the waterfront

Explore Shanghai through the Yuyuan area and its contrasting modern waterfront. Group visits geographically to avoid unnecessary city crossings. The day's value lies in the different scales of the city, with time for independent exploration between selected cultural stops.

Planned overnight: Shanghai.

Day 13A water-town excursion

Consider a day excursion to Fengjing or an appropriate water-town setting near Shanghai, subject to final access and travel arrangements. Canal streets provide a useful contrast to the metropolis. Return with time to prepare for onward travel rather than adding another major evening activity.

Planned overnight: Shanghai.

Day 14Depart China

Finish in Shanghai and allow sufficient time for the airport journey. Additional city nights or a separate extension can be discussed if you would like more time after the core route.
