Discover the journey
Trace Thailand's changing capitals from Bangkok through Ayutthaya and Sukhothai to Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. The twelve-day route contrasts the capital's palace and temple districts with archaeological landscapes and the different rhythm of northern streets and river settings. Multi-night stays give time to explore without packing each morning. Open days in Bangkok and Chiang Mai allow for markets, a museum, another temple or a quieter afternoon, according to your interests. The journey returns to Bangkok by air before departure. Long road sections are balanced with fuller days at each base, with time for breaks in the heat and a manageable selection of visits.

Day-by-day itinerary
This proposed itinerary can be adjusted around your interests and travel dates. Visits, transport and overnight arrangements are confirmed in your written proposal before booking.
Day 1Arrive in Bangkok
Arrive in Bangkok and take time to rest before beginning the route. A gentle local introduction can give a first sense of the capital, with tomorrow left for its royal and temple districts.
Planned overnight: Bangkok.
Day 2Bangkok's royal and temple districts
Explore the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew area, selecting nearby visits to reduce time crossing the city. Dress requirements, walking and heat all influence the pace. Leave room for refreshments and an independent look at the surrounding streets.
Planned overnight: Bangkok.
Day 3A flexible day in the capital
Keep a full day for personal interests in Bangkok, from markets and riverside neighborhoods to an additional museum or temple. Optional experiences can be discussed in advance. This open day also gives the plan room to adjust if a principal site changes its opening arrangements.
Planned overnight: Bangkok.
Day 4Travel to an earlier capital
Leave Bangkok for Ayutthaya and spend time with its archaeological landscape. Ruins are spread across a substantial area, so combine walking with appropriately planned local transport. The day ends here, avoiding the pressure of visiting everything before a same-day return to Bangkok.
Planned overnight: Ayutthaya.
Day 5North to Sukhothai
Continue north to Sukhothai, allowing a meaningful transfer period before exploring part of the historical park. Choose a focused selection of temple remains rather than an exhaustive circuit. Light and temperature can shape the timing, with additional walking dependent on arrival and energy.
Planned overnight: Sukhothai.
Day 6Continue into northern Thailand
Travel toward Chiang Rai, breaking the overland journey at sensible intervals. This is primarily a transition day into the north. A short orientation after arrival may be appropriate, while longer visits are better reserved for tomorrow so the road section remains manageable.
Planned overnight: Chiang Rai.
Day 7Northern river landscapes
Use Chiang Rai as a base for the northern river landscape and Golden Triangle area. A boat component can be considered where suitable operation and access allow. The day focuses on the regional setting and does not include crossing into another country.
Planned overnight: Chiang Rai.
Day 8Onward to Chiang Mai
Continue to Chiang Mai, with selected northern sights considered along the way if timing allows. The city becomes a base for several nights. Keep the arrival afternoon measured, giving space to settle in before beginning a more detailed exploration of its older districts.
Planned overnight: Chiang Mai.
Day 9Choose your pace in Chiang Mai
Choose how to spend an open day in Chiang Mai. Return to a market, seek out a quiet museum or simply leave time to explore independently. An optional workshop or outing can be discussed around your interests.
Planned overnight: Chiang Mai.
Day 10Old-city temples and neighborhoods
Explore Chiang Mai's old-city temple precincts and surrounding neighborhoods, allowing time for architectural details and daily life between the larger visits. A local meal or cultural experience can be considered separately, with breaks to keep the walking comfortable in the heat.
Planned overnight: Chiang Mai.
Day 11Fly back to Bangkok
Return to Bangkok by a planned domestic flight and use the remaining time for rest or a final short city outing. The overnight provides a buffer before onward travel. Exact connections and baggage allowances need to be coordinated with your wider travel arrangements.
Planned overnight: Bangkok.
Day 12Depart Thailand
Finish in Bangkok and allow enough time for onward travel. If you would like to continue elsewhere in Thailand, discuss a separate extension and the connections it would need.
