Discover the journey
Begin on Baku's Caspian waterfront, then travel west into Azerbaijan's foothills and historic towns. The eleven-day route links the lanes of Icherisheher with Gobustan's archaeological landscape, Gabala's mountain surroundings, Sheki's palace quarter and caravanserais, and the city of Ganja. Two-night stays in Sheki and Ganja leave time to explore beyond a first impression. A rail journey back to Baku brings the route full circle, with a final day for the Absheron Peninsula and contemporary architecture. The contrast between coast, countryside and city gives this journey its rhythm, with time for craft traditions and quieter streets between the larger sights.

Day-by-day itinerary
This proposed itinerary can be adjusted around your interests and travel dates. Visits, transport and overnight arrangements are confirmed in your written proposal before booking.
Day 1Arrive beside the Caspian
Arrive in Baku and take time to settle in beside the Caspian. If your arrival leaves enough time and energy, a short neighborhood walk can introduce the waterfront before tomorrow's fuller exploration.
Planned overnight: Baku.
Day 2Old Baku and the waterfront
Devote the day to the contrast between Icherisheher's compact lanes and the broad waterfront. Build the walking route around the Maiden Tower area and Shirvanshahs Palace, leaving time to pause in the old town before a separate look at the modern skyline.
Planned overnight: Baku.
Day 3Gobustan and the coastal landscape
Use Baku as a base for an excursion toward Gobustan, pairing its archaeological landscape with the region's mud-volcano terrain where access permits. The emphasis is on understanding the surrounding environment as well as seeing individual sites; road conditions will determine the final sequence.
Planned overnight: Baku.
Day 4Across the foothills to Gabala
Leave the capital for the foothills, breaking the drive around the Diri Baba and Shamakhi area. The change from coastal city to agricultural countryside is part of the day's interest. Arrive in Gabala with the evening free from additional scheduled sightseeing.
Planned overnight: Gabala.
Day 5Gabala landscapes and the road west
Take in the mountain surroundings of Gabala before continuing toward Sheki. A possible cable-car outing depends on weather and operation; the archaeological area and Nij offer other cultural interests. Balance the stops with time for the onward drive.
Planned overnight: Sheki.
Day 6Craft traditions and caravanserais
Spend a full day in and around Sheki, focusing on its palace quarter, caravanserai architecture and local craft traditions. Consider an optional excursion to Kish for a different village setting, balancing it with time for local crafts and the town.
Planned overnight: Sheki.
Day 7Westward to Ganja
Continue to Ganja, with time for its religious architecture and unusual urban landmarks after the drive. Two nights here give the western part of Azerbaijan space of its own. A detour toward Shamkir can be considered if arrival timing allows.
Planned overnight: Ganja.
Day 8Goygol countryside and town
Explore the Goygol area from a Ganja base, comparing the lake setting with the town's distinctive streets. Access to the reserve will shape the day's route. Leave flexibility between outdoor time and architecture, especially if weather reduces the value of a longer landscape excursion.
Planned overnight: Ganja.
Day 9Return to Baku by rail
Use the Ganja to Baku rail corridor for the return east, subject to the appropriate service being available. After arrival, a relaxed walk around Nizami Street and Fountain Square provides an urban change of pace without adding a second long excursion.
Planned overnight: Baku.
Day 10Absheron and contemporary architecture
Reserve the final full day for the Absheron Peninsula and a closer look at Baku's contemporary architecture. Yanar Dag and the Heydar Aliyev Center area offer contrasting subjects. The choice of interior visits and exterior viewing can follow your interests and opening arrangements.
Planned overnight: Baku.
Day 11Depart Azerbaijan
Finish in Baku with time for checkout and onward travel. If you would like another night or time to revisit the old town, discuss an extension alongside your departure plans.
